Using Oral Placement Therapy for Clients with the Diagnosis of "A Muscle-Based Speech Clarity Disorder" [Espoo, Finland][December 12 and 13, 2019]

Course Description

This two-day presentation will discuss the importance of a prescribed therapeutic "oral preparatory phase" feeding program used in conjunction with Oral Placement Therapy and direct work on speech sound production for addressing the needs of individuals of all ages with the diagnosis of a muscle-based speech clarity disorder. Day 1 will be a refresher course of the "Three Part Treatment Plan" class. It will include Oral Placement step-by-step therapy techniques to address each of these areas: sensory. feeding ,OPT and speech. An interactive practicum will be included in each area.

On the morning of the second day Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson will perform a live evaluation with a child who fits the criteria for a muscle-based speech disorder. Prior to the evaluation a review of the assessment form and pertinent information, which has been supplied by the parents and/or therapist, will be presented. After the evaluation the class participants will work together with Ms. Rosenfeld-Johnson to develop goals and to design the comprehensive program plans.

The afternoon session will include questions from the participants based upon their use of the therapy tools with their own clients. Participants are encouraged to bring a 1-2 minute video segment of their client to be shown to the class. Together with Ms. Rosenfeld-Johnson the class participants will discuss area of concern and make suggestions to address the client's needs. If there are limited videos Ms. Rosenfeld-Johnson will use segments of the work with her own clients. 

Learning Outcomes

  • The participant will be able to analyze the sensory system to make the correct sensory diagnosis.
  • The participant will be able to asses feeding skills as related to feeding safety and speech usage.
  • The participant will be able to identify abdominal grading skill levels for speech usage.
  • The participant will be able to evaluate jaw, lip, cheek, and tongue levels for speech usage.
  • The participant will be able to apply oral placement strategies, when appropriate, with infant, preschool, and school-aged children as a part of comprehensive speech and language therapy intervention.

Content Disclosure: This presentation will focus on treatment methods related to the use of TalkTools® OPT resources. Other similar treatment approaches will receive limited or no coverage during this lecture.
