Course Description

SLPs often are challenged in articulation therapy when traditional methods such as auditory discrimination games and sound imitation drills do not work. Van Riper's Phonetic Placement Approach taught us "to use every tool possible", and this included tactile cues. Oral placement techniques that support jaw stability, jaw grading, labial and lingual positions for specific phonemes can be helpful when road blocks occur. This course will look at each set of phonemes by placement group ( bilabials, alveolars, velars, palatals, lingua-dentals and labio-dentals) and will identify specific techniques to assist with placement for these phonemes. Evidenced based practice resources will be provided.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Participants will be able to identify at least three reasons why a client cannot imitate a placement cue.
  2. Participants will be able to list three phonetic placement "tools" that can assist with shaping sounds from placement to production.
  3. Participants will be able to list at least two resource materials that assist with phonetic placements.
