Whether an SLP is in the schools, hospital or clinic one common denominator is goal writing. Medical insurance requires medical necessity with prognosis. Schools demand educational relevance. Patients and parents require accountability for the services offered. These demands leave SLPs perplexed at times on how to write goals and objectives that will satisfy all these requirements without reinventing the wheel.

SMART goals were developed by George Doran, Arthur Miller and James Cunninghamin in their 1981 article “There's a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management Goals and Objectives”. This format eventually became a widely used model in business and education. The SMART Goals system refers to goals which are : specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (SMART). Robyn suggests we write even “SMART-ER”  goals, by adding the educational or rehabilitative compliances to our report writing skills.

With 28 years experience in the public schools, 26 years as an independent evaluator and 26 years in private practice, Robyn has been perfecting report writing and goals that are iron clad in both insurance reimbursement and individualized education plan compliance. With this course you will receive a free download with dozens of sample goals for oral placement, feeding, pre-feeding, speech and orofacial myofunctional goals.

Note: Participants should have some prior coursework in oral motor, feeding, speech and/or orofacial myology as these methods will not be taught but rather discussed in terms of program planning and delivery.

Participants will be able to:

1. List at least 2 measurable goals.
2. Describe what makes a goal measurable.
3. Identify two goals that are not measurable.
