TalkTools is teaming up with Coach Mel (Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLP) and Dr. Yum (Nimali Fernando, MPD, MD) for a special webinar focusing on practical strategies and techniques to take the pressure off kiddos who are hesitant eaters. This unique webinar will include an interactive 30-minute Q&A session who anyone attending the LIVE broadcast!

Melanie and Nimali will be LIVE in the Dr. Yum Teaching Kitchen at Yum Pediatrics to talk about why kids develop picky eating habits and how self-limited diets create anxiety (and vice versa). They will walk participants through strategies to mitigate mealtime anxiety -- from breakfast to bedtime snacks with the overarching goal of creating a culture of wellness for the entire family -- even those with hesitant eaters.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • readily apply 3 strategies to minimize anxious behaviors in clients at mealtime
  • identify 3 reasons why children develop anxiety toward eating
  • understand the importance of overall wellness for all family members
  • develop strategies from breakfast to bedtime snacks while considering the family’s unique food culture

Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLPtreats children birth to teens who have difficulty eating.  Melanie’s advice has been shared in a variety of television and print media, including The New York Times, CNN.com, Huffington Post and Parents Magazine and The ASHA Leader and ASHA Leader Blog.  She is the co-author of the award-winning Raising a Healthy Happy Eater: A Stage-by-Stage Guide to Setting Your Child on the Path to Adventurous Eating (2015) and Baby Self-Feeding: Solutions for Introducing Purees and Solids to Create Lifelong Healthy Eating Habits (2016). Melanie is the author of Happy Mealtimes with Happy Kids (2010) and the producer of the award-winning kids’ CD Dancing in the Kitchen: Songs that Celebrate the Joy of Food!  The tips in her latest book, Adventures in Veggieland: Help Your Kids Learn to Love Vegetables with 100 Easy Activities and Recipes (2018) are based on the research and Melanie’s 20 years of success as a pediatric feeding therapist. Melanie is an active volunteer and co-writer of The Doctor Yum Preschool Food Curriculum bringing food education to hundreds of preschoolers in the United States. Nimali Fernando, MD, MPH is a pediatrician practicing in Fredericksburg, VA and founder of the website doctoryum.org and The Doctor Yum Project. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh school of Medicine and School of Public Health with an M.D. and Masters in Public Health. She completed residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center Houston and served there for two years as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Pediatrics. In 2005 she and her husband, also a physician, moved their family back east to Fredericksburg, Virginia. In 2014 she opened Yum Pediatrics, a full service general pediatrics practice with a focus on wellness and prevention through a healthy diet. Yum Pediatrics shares a large teaching kitchen and teaching garden with The Doctor Yum Project. She is also co-author of the new book, “Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater, a Parent’s Handbook” and co-creator of “The Picky Eater Course” a video course for raising healthy, happy eaters from birth to school age. A portion of the royalties of her new book  will be donated to the Doctor Yum Project’s programs.
