Course Description

According to the ASHA Practice Portal, Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) include issues with: open mouth, habitual lips-apart resting posture, structural abnormalities, dental anomalies, abnormal oral resting posture, distorted sound production, drooling, nonnutritive sucking habits, lack of a lingual palatal seal and interdental or lingual dental contact during swallows. Certainly children with complex diagnoses can present with these signs and symptoms. In fact, children with orofacial hypotonia and reduced muscle strength present with OMDs, such as Down Syndrome. Since the treatment of OMDs is with orofacial myofunctional therapy which is designed for children four and above, clinicians are left feeling challenged on how to treat these issues in complex populations and children under four. Robyn Merkel-Walsh will discuss the specific challenges faced in complex populations, how to employ therapeutic parameters and what passive and preventative measures can be used to help develop improved oral resting posture, speech and swallowing to support the structure of the hard tissue. Note, this course was originally written for the International Association of Orofacial Myology’s Annual Conference and is being expanded to include more therapeutic solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1.  Identify two complex populations that may present with OMDs.

2. List at least three signs and symptoms of OMD.

3. Execute at least two OMD strategies for complex populations.
