Therapists in private practice, home based therapy or schools versus therapists in the hospital setting often have very different skillset and trainings as well as different goals dependent on the setting. Those in private practice who are responsible for the outpatient care of individuals who may have been evaluated and referred from the hospital setting are often confused by the recommendations from the hospital based SLP. In some cases, they may not receive adequate information to assist in developing their therapy plan. Many of us are not well versed in the dysphagia evaluation and how to apply in the outpatient and home setting. We often would like to refer for a swallow study but may not receive the useful information we were hoping for or the ability to interpret findings and apply the recommendations. If you have had any of these feelings than this course is for you.
Presenters Renee Roy Hill MS, CCC-SLP COM® and Colette Ellis MEd, CCC-SLP, BCS-S will present information to aid the therapist in bridging the gap. This course will provide a foundation in A-Z’s of feeding and swallowing. We will discuss when it might be important to recommend further swallow assessment, how to better request the information you are looking for based on your initial evaluation or therapy sessions with the client and interpret the information given. The new pediatric feeding codes will also be discussed to help the therapist better understand when to choose a specific diagnostic code.
Often, feeding courses focus on 1 aspect of feeding such as early feeding, oral motor-based feeding problems or picky and or behavioral feeding. This course will dive into multiple aspects of feeding and how each area may impact the other. As children get older, food limitations often become more apparent, especially when a child is having difficulty moving from “easy” or “processed foods” to typical table foods. Taking a look at all aspects of feeding can give the therapist a better picture of these food limitations. This webinar will take a look at the evaluation process for feeding making specific recommendations in each category to fully assess the individual’s feeding problem. Discussions on who else might need to join the feeding team and when will also be discussed. Therapeutic approach will also be covered with several different thoughts on methodology and will be covered for children who have limited diets due to these issues.
Participants will be able to:
- Define a feeding disorder, pediatric feeding disorder and swallowing disorder.
- Assess structural, medical, and oral motor issues that may impact all aspects of feeding.
- Look at the functional aspects of chewing, spoon feeding, cup drinking and straw drinking and identify deficits that may impact food choices.
- Understand all the phases of swallow and its impact on each other.
- Consider underlying Health considerations when developing a therapy plan as part of the evaluation process and possible referrals needed.
- Apply understanding of the impact of low and high tone on eating and swallowing.
- Evaluate food preferences from a sensory, behavioral and motor perspective.
Develop an understanding of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) and its implications for treatment.
