Collective Thought: Speech and Dental perspectives on Oral Rest Posture Therapy

Course Description
Speech Pathologists and Dental Hygienists are the primary providers of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy,
yet we each bring a unique perspective to this growing specialty. When we collectively combine our
knowledge base, we find that we become powerful allies in the treatment of Orofacial Myofunctional
Disorders. This course digs deep into the common ground between our two fields: The importance of Oral
Rest Posture.

Learning Outcomes
The participant will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between correct and incorrect Oral Rest Posture
  2. Recognize the Dental and Speech issues associated with incorrect tongue, jaw and lip posture
  3. Define the role of Dental Hygienists and Speech and Language Pathologists in remediating
  4. Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders
  5. Understand when to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team

Timed Agenda

  • 30 minutes – Overview of Correct/Incorrect Oral Rest Posture
  • 20 minutes – Dental/Speech effects of JAW posture
  • 20 minutes – Dental/Speech effects of TONGUE posture
  • 20 minutes – Dental/Speech effects of LIP posture
  • 20 minutes – Collaboration with a team
  • 10 minutes -- Wrap-up/Q&A
