Differential Diagnosis: OMDs vs. SSDs (Speech Sound Disorders)

Course Description

Differential diagnosis for clients with speech sound disorder is imperative in developing an appropriate treatment plan. Differing diagnoses require different treatment plans. OMDs require prerequisite work to the underlying motor system prior to working on speech. This group is under diagnosed and often treated from traditional methods with minimal results. In this presentation the participant will learn the diagnostic components needed to differentiate these diagnoses and how this impacts treatment.

Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:

  • define 2 orofacial myofunctional disorders
  • identify 2 speech sound disorders
  • conduct an analysis to determine whether a client has an orofacial myofunctional disorder or a speech sound disorder
  • outline an initial treatment plan for both disorders
