How the Swallow Develops the Body and the Systems it Integrates

Course Description
Too often speech pathologists ignore the significance of Myofunctional Therapy because they do not have a clear understanding of the roll of a correct swallow pattern. A correct swallow plays a major role in the development of the mouth, respiration, balance, posture, hearing and gastrointestinal functioning to name a few. It coordinates multiple systems to correctly eat or produce well-articulated speech. The proper functioning of these systems, therefore, often need a team approach to create a successful outcome.

Learning Outcomes
The participant will be able to:

  1. Improve their observational skills to better recognize a potential reverse swallow
  2. Recognize factors that may be impeding a patient’s progress for speech or eating
  3. Provide input to other professionals how the swallow may be impacting their treatment of their patient
  4. Answer certain concerns for parents with issues they are seeing in their child
