Previously, Dr. Allen was the clinic dental director of Clinica Family Health, a nationally recognized federally qualified community health center serving the Denver metropolitan area, where he remains active in clinical practice. PhD, MSc, RN/RM/RHV
Gill Rapley PhD, MSc, RN/RM/RHV has over 40 years’ experience in the field of infant feeding, as practitioner, teacher, writer and researcher. She qualified as a nurse and health visitor (similar to a public health nurse) in 1978 and practised as a health visitor for around 20 years. She later also qualified as a midwife. She became a voluntary breastfeeding counsellor in 1986 and qualified as a lactation consultant in 1994. From 1996 to 2010 she worked for the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative, latterly as Deputy Programme Director, while pursuing her interest in complementary feeding in her spare time.
Gill gained a Master’s degree in 2005, having undertaken a small piece of research that showed that babies could feed themselves with solid foods from 6 months old, rather than needing to be spoon fed. She subsequently pioneered the approach known as baby-led weaning (BLW), which rapidly gained popularity amongst parents, and interest amongst researchers. In 2015 she gained a PhD, for which her research compared spoon feeding of purees with self-feeding using graspable pieces of food, and considered the likely impact of each method on the infant’s learning, development and enjoyment of food.
Gill lectures around the world on BLW. She has had articles published in several professional and academic journals and has contributed to a handful of textbooks. She is the co-author of five books on infant feeding and parenting, beginning with the definitive Baby-led Weaning: Helping your baby to love good food, published in 2008 and now available in over 20 languages.
Gill is married with three grown-up children and lives in Kent, England. Gill’s website is www.rapleyweaning.com. Her Twitter name is @gillrap.
