Have Questions?

I am brand new to Oral Placement Therapy -- how do I learn more?

Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) is a specific type of sensory-oral-motor therapy.

Sensory-oral-motor therapy combines the components of traditional speech therapy -- auditory and visual stimulation -- with sensory stimulation for improved speech and feeding.

Targeting the sensory system is key in this therapy approach. Sensory input to the orofacial structural region can result in improved oral-motor function for feeding, eating, drinking and speaking, especially when traditional speech therapy has not been successful.

This approach can be especially effective for certain individuals and specific scenarios:

  • -- If the sensory system is not naturally regulated
  • -- When feeding phases are dysfunctional, disorganized, and/or delayed
  • -- If speech is disordered or delayed
  • -- When there is atypical development of orofacial structures

OPT expands upon sensory-oral-motor therapy by focusing on improving placement and stability of the orofacial musculature (jaw, lips, tongue) via standardized, systematic techniques

How do I get started with the Levels Program?

Start with TalkTools Level 1 courses: 3-Part Treatment Plan for OPT and Feeding Therapy: A Sensory Motor Approach. Training options are via Workshops or eLearning. There are no prerequisites for starting these courses and you can apply what you've learned right away in your therapy practice!

Who is eligible to participate in the Levels Program?

Level 1: anyone who is interested in gaining knowledge and training in OPT can take our Level 1 courses.
