Tethered oral tissue, or TOTs, describes an abnormality in one or more of the seven frena in the oral cavity, including the maxillary buccal, mandibular buccal, maxillary labial, mandibular labial, and lingual frena. Because many medical and educational professionals have not been trained to recognize the structural and functional red flags of TOTs, these restrictions are frequently missed during speech and feeding evaluations. Robyn designed the TOTs 5-step screening tool so that IBCLCs, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, dentists, ENTs, pediatricians, and orthodontists can quickly screen for TOTs and know when a referral to a specially trained specialist is warranted. The course highlights common symptoms associated with TOTs, including sleep disorders and dysphagia, and clarifies what a coordinated TOTs team and referral pathway can look like. Across a structured agenda, participants review the background of TOTs, learn the location of each of the seven frena, and practice applying the screening tool itself to real assessment scenarios. By the end of this 0.25 CEU, intermediate level course, participants will be able to identify at least three signs and symptoms of TOTs, locate the seven frena, and list at least two reasons that warrant a referral to a TOTs-trained specialist.
