Date: November 28, 2018
Location: Lanham, MD (Washington DC Metro)
Presenter: Monica Purdy, MA, CCC-SLP
The term “sensory differences” has recently been added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a characteristic of Autism Spectrum Disorders. However as Speech and Language Pathologists we see many individuals with different diagnoses who exhibit sensory differences, which effect how they perform in therapy, school or their home setting.
An individual’s sensory system is the foundation in how they are able to interpret, process, and react in their environment. As Speech and Language Pathologists, often times our education does not reflect the importance of addressing the sensory system. Addressing an individual’s sensory differences is an important component to a speech therapy session. Sensory differences affect every facet in an individual’s life from eating, articulation, language, social and academic skills to self-care skills and play.
This course will allow attendees to evaluate their own sensory differences, which will give insight and perspective toward their clients. The Instructor will demonstrate the importance of modulation, under responsive or over responsive actions in order to guide and create successful therapy sessions.
Attendees will be taught to recognize how a client may be processing information, and to understand which strategies and Evidence Based Practices to use to help the individual both in therapy and other environments such as school, work, church, home and play groups. The importance of working with an Occupational Therapist in treatment or consultation will be addressed.
Participants will be able to:
- gain a fundamental understanding of the sensory system
- able to differentiate sensory differences and atypical responses
- participants experience activities to evaluate their own sensory system
- be able to implement sensory strategies and Evidence Based Practices in order to increase arousal, production, and attention during a therapy session
