Using a multi-disciplinary learning approach – combining physical prompts, together with auditory and tactile input – to teach abstract or expressive language has been successfully applied across many settings (schools, geriatric facilities, hospitals, clinics, and home-based therapy) for years.
TalkTools founder, Sara Rosenfeld Johnson, MS, CCC-SLP has integrated this approach to develop a new language program, T.A.L.K.S (Teaching Abstract Language using (K) Concrete Symbols), focusing on clients who may not easily learn expressive language through purely auditory input (“Listen to me then say what I say”) and may better learn through a combination of auditory, visual and tactile input.
This client-friendly, goal-oriented program combines physical word-symbol blocks and word symbol cards, together with specific auditory and tactile input to teach clients how to incorporate abstract language in isolation, phrases and, ultimately, sentences. T.A.L.K.S can be used both in individual and group sessions. Case study client videos as well as a homework option for caregivers to use between therapy sessions will be included.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
Integrate auditory, visual and tactile techniques to teach expressive language usage
Illustrate how to utilize a set of color-coded blocks to assist in the tactile teaching of abstract words
Formulate a client-based program to treat expressive language learning deficits
