Course Description

TalkTools LEVEL 4 ADVANCED Therapist, Heather Vukelich, MS, CCC-SLP and Dr. Brian Hockel, DDS will be discussing how the posture and function of the jaw and mouth muscles affects speech, facial and jaw development, and even the airway. As breathing and speaking are vital to health and personal development, Heather and Brian will address the common root causes of speech, orthodontic, and sleep apnea problems and how TalkTools OPT can be an essential part of treatment. Heather will address specific issues with regard to Down Syndrome clients.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • understand the etiology of facial and airway growth, and the implications for sleep apnea
  • integrate OPT methods as part of overall treatment for speech and facial development
  • demonstrate orthodontic approaches which affect speech, facial appearance and airway health

Heather Vukelich, MS, CCC-SLP, is a certified LEVEL 4 ADVANCED TalkTools  therapist and owner of Happy Kids Therapy in Danville, CA. She specializes in treating speech and feeding issues in individuals with Down Syndrome but her practice also focuses on: dietary considerations, communication programs, educational programs, medical considerations, physical and sensory needs, as well as behavioral strategies.  Heather is a graduate of Gallaudet University.

Brian Hockel, DDS, is a general dentist in private practice with a focus on orthodontics that aims to prevent or treat airway problems like sleep apnea. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of facial growth guidance, and is an orthodontic instructor for the American Academy of Gnathologic Orthopedics. With a sister and a daughter who both have Down Syndrome, Dr. Hockel has taken a special interest in ways to maximize the health and development of children with DS from an airway, orthodontic and facial development perspective. He and his wife Beth have eleven children, six boys and five girls. He is a graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry.
