Course Description

"Big 6" is a term coined by behavioral specialist and educator, Dr. Eric Haughton, back in the 1980's and refers to what are the major fine motor skills -- six additional major movements have since been added.

The Big 6+6 is a behavioral approach to teaching motor skills. As BCBAs are focused on teaching behaviors, and motor skills are a behavior, there is research within the ABA field on teaching motor skills, the big 6+6 being one of the researched areas.

This approach is an ideal complement to TalkTools OPT techniques, as the Big 6+6 follows these activities: 1) focus on the motor movements required for functional skills; 2) practice these motor movements to fluency, isolating them from the actual activity where the movements are required; 3) assess the generalization of these movements to within the functional activity where the movement is required.

TalkTools Instructor and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) expert, Risca Solomon, will delve into why the "Big 6 + 6" motor movements are so essential to everyday living. Instruction will include challenges and roadblocks associated with learning these skills in the special needs population and provide techniques and strategies for client success -- and overall quality of everyday life.
