Course Description

The most basic of human functions- breathing, eating, speaking- take place in the mouth and throat-- TalkTools instructor, Rehab Zaytoun, will be presenting the tasks associated with these activities, what happens when these activities are compromised, and strategies to advance breathing, speech, and feeding skills. Rehab will be providing an overview of the oral and nasal anatomies, focusing on the impacts of tongue and jaw position and breathing function. Certain factors that can affect oral growth patterns, breathing, feeding, and swallowing will be presented, including breastfeeding and tethered oral tissues. Case studies will be included.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Participants will be able to understand basic oral and nasal anatomies.
  2. Participants will be able to identify typical and atypical airflow patterns.
  3. Participants will be able to identify three factors that can impact mouth development.
  4. Participants will be able to recognize common causes of speech and feeding disorders.
  5. Participants will be able to apply two techniques to facilitate breathing.
  6. Participants will be able to apply two techniques to improve jaw position, tongue position, and lip closure.
  7. Participants will be able to develop a Breathing Assessment Plan.

Content Disclosure: This presentation will focus on treatment methods related to the use of TalkTools® OPT resources. Other similar treatment approaches will receive limited or no coverage during this lecture.
