Course Description: Introductory

SLPs often engage in social media groups such as Facebook in order to share information about all aspects of our field. This ranges from getting clinical advice to asking for information regarding billing and coding. With over two billion active users on Facebook, it is certainly not a private or secure forum and it can lead to potential problems for speech pathologists, or any professional who uses social media as a professional sounding board. Robyn and Jennifer previously discussed this topic in the ASHA Leader/ASHA Wire and wanted to expand this topic to a webinar format.  ASHA recently created a policy on social media in relation to ethics, and it mirrors many of the concerns Robyn and Jennifer presented. The presenters conducted a research study on clinical perspectives from social media and will include this in their discussion.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to list at least three examples where social media posts can result in questionable ethics.
  2. Participants will be able to give an example of a HIPPA violation associated with social media.
  3. Participants will be able to list at least two ways in which social media influences.
