Course Description

Timing is always a factor in orofacial myology. When to start expansion, when to release a tongue tie or when to start orofacial myofunctional therapy are frequent questions posed by SLPs and RDHs alike. Depending on the respected field, one might find different answers by an orthodontist vs. a release provider vs. a therapist.

Robyn and Sarah are prepared to sit down together for some straight talk about their experiences with palatal expansion. They will compare clinical variations of the SLP vs. the RDH perspective to analyze form, function and timing. Oral resting posture, noxious habits, nasal breathing , sleep and speech will be discussed. Clinical complications will be analyzed through the two unique lenses of dental and oral health professionals to problem solve and support other professionals who seek answers to their questions.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain 2 ways in which an expander can help improve orofacial myofunctional challenges.
  2. List 2 ways limited tongue space can cause functional issues.
  3. Describe a reason why a TOTs release should be done before palatal expansion.
