Jaw Grading Bite Blocks™ (Red) | Jaw Strength & Stability for OPT Therapy — TalkTools®

TalkTools® Jaw Grading Bite Blocks™ (Red)

Clinicians reach for the TalkTools® Jaw Grading Bite Blocks™ throughout core Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) activities, most notably the Bite Block Hierarchy, and the set remains one of TalkTools' most-requested tools. The graduated set builds symmetrical jaw strength, stability, and grading, and clinicians use it to assess and treat clients whose weak jaw musculature shows up during speech sound production or feeding. The hard, textured surface delivers proprioceptive feedback while supporting treatment of dysarthria, apraxia, dyspraxia, Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), and tethered oral tissues (TOTs).

Therapy Goals

  • Promote symmetrical jaw strength and stability through controlled bite resistance across a graduated six-level hierarchy
  • Build jaw grading skills for controlled, symmetrical jaw opening and closing during feeding and speech sound production
  • Address reduced jaw mobility, jaw sliding, or jaw jutting patterns in clients with weak jaw musculature
  • Facilitate assessment and treatment of articulation, phonation, apraxia, dysarthria, and dyspraxia using graded jaw resistance
  • Support treatment of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) and tethered oral tissues (TOTs)
  • Establish jaw stability as the foundation for independent tongue and lip movement in speech and feeding therapy
  • TalkTools bestseller: backed by extensive clinical history in OPT programs worldwide
  • Hard, textured bite surface: provides proprioceptive feedback and resistance for targeted jaw strengthening and stability work
  • Complete graduated hierarchy: two sets of six Bite Blocks support progressive jaw grading therapy
  • Reusable, durable construction: supports long-term clinical and home-based use
  • Instruction booklet included: supports therapist-guided implementation
  • Broad clinical applicability: used with dysarthria, apraxia, dyspraxia, OMDs, and TOTs
  • Children and adults with dysarthria, apraxia, or dyspraxia affecting jaw function during speech and feeding
  • Clients with Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) or tethered oral tissues (TOTs)
  • Clients presenting with reduced jaw mobility, jaw sliding, or jaw jutting during feeding or speech
  • Speech-language pathologists implementing OPT or Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) programs
  • Occupational therapists supporting oral motor and feeding development
  • Feeding therapists addressing jaw stability and grading in clinical and home settings

Amazing tool for speech therapy!

We've been using biting blocks in our speech therapy sessions, and they’ve been a game changer—especially for clients working on jaw stability and strength. The different sizes make it easy to gradually progress, and the material is durable yet gentle enough for repeated use. They're easy to clean, super handy for oral motor exercises, and even parents have noticed improvements in their children’s coordination and articulation. Definitely a must-have in any therapist’s toolkit!

Perfect match for tongue strengthening!

I show these to parents as an option to purchase when their child is assigned tongue strengthening exercises to improve speech sound productions. They work great for the different levels of jaw grading the students are asked to achieve 🤩

Motor Speech Program

Hello Wonderful Colleagues, I have been using bite blocks and jaw closure tubes to facilitate motor speech for over 20 years. They helped me teach non-verbal children, late talkers, and others to speak with increasing precision. Thank you, Sara Johnson for creating these. di

Good quality

The material of the Bite Blocks is steady, durable, and good in quality. Love the instruction book.
The only downside was its shipping fee was quite high for an international order, almost the same price as the took, and it took some time to prepare and deliver.

Easy to use

I have never attended a formal Talk Tools training. I have watched a few videos over the years. This has been the tool I've used the most. It's straightforward and easy to implement in the school setting. And they are easy to wash!

Get rid of jaw sliding during speech!

This tool is a must have for any child with Down syndrome or any person that experiences jaw sliding during speech and or smiling. It comes with clear directions that you have to follow in order for the tool to work... so don’t go too fast! Many children have eliminated jaw sliding during speech and smiling due to this tool! Thank you Sara Rosenfeld Johnson for creating this life changing tool! Thank you TalkTools for continuing to provide great tools and directions so that you can use these with or without the direction of a therapist!

It is the efforts of amazing SLPs such as yourself and the parents who put in the work that allow this tool and it's instructions to prove successful - thanks for sharing.
