TalkTools® Straw Kit

The TalkTools® Straw Kit contains all the tools needed to implement the Straw Hierarchy, a core component of Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) that develops tongue retraction, grading, lip rounding, and jaw-lip-tongue dissociation across twelve stages of development. Clinicians and clients alike appreciate the Straw Hierarchy for its measurable progression and motivating format.

Therapy Goals

  • Develop tongue retraction through graded straw drinking across twelve sequential stages
  • Improve jaw-lip-tongue dissociation using structured straw resistance and shape variations

  • Strengthen lip rounding and protrusion as a foundation for target speech sounds
  • Promote oral motor skill carryover through a motivating, functional daily activity
  • Complete hierarchy kit: implements the TalkTools Straw Hierarchy from stage 1 through 12
  • Measurable progression: twelve stages provide clear benchmarks for therapy tracking and data collection

Using for oral motor therapy

Excited to try this new tool and incorporate it into our oral motor therapy. My therapist recommended Talk Tools, very happy that parents have a relatively inexpensive way to help their kids with speech delays.

LOVE this kit!

We have used the straw kits for years and find such huge benefits for our kids and their therapy outcomes! We have loved how you can address lateral side tongue spread and appropriate oral motor movements while doing something as functional and fun as drinking through straws! Thank you Talk Tools for all you do!

Straw Kit Program

have been practicing for 30 years and when I was introduced to the Straw program and used with my clients I saw great improvement in my students tongue retraction for speech development . I use this straw program in conjunction with my traditional Articulation therapy . I have seen significant improvements in the students articulation remediation. The students develop better oral motor awareness, improved tongue retraction , and jaw stability .
Great tools to add to anyone's practice in Speech-Language Therapy.

Question

The performance of the clients after using the kit sounds so improving, I would like to ask if the tools are washable and sterilized and one kit can be used for more clients; please let me know about it.

Thanks

parents should try it on themselves

My son with DS started using the number 1 straw at 9 months. At first I did not understand the purpose of the different straws, until my speech therapist made me drink water with them and become aware of the position of my tongue. Now my son is 17 months old and he uses the number 4. But the most important thing is that I understood the objective of the exercise. It's not just to drink water. It's like doing "sit-ups" for the tongue!

They are such powerful tools!

Without muscle strength and mobility, my students cannot produce speech sounds. These and the horn kit are the answer. For over 15 years, they have made me successful. So very grateful!

Thank you for the powerful endorsement and for advocating the importance of muscle strength and mobility as the foundation for speech production. Keep up the good work, here's to 15 more years and countless lives touched by your great work.

Great Tool!

I am an SLP who has used the straw kit with many clients. I have seen excellent success rates with this product when used right. It should be used under the supervision of a trained SLP to ensure that the child is using it right (i.e. not biting and using good lip rounding). It improves motor function for feeding and improves speech clarity. I recommend this to lots of my clients.

Rachael, thanks for your comments. Yes we recommend training for SLPs who are wanting to implement our tools and techniques into therapy sessions. However, parents can implement at home with the guidance from a trained SLP such as your self.

An excellent resource

I have a child (1 year 4) with DS. We start with the Honey Bear when he was 10 months and now we are in the straw #2, he has almost mastered the straw. it's incredible how he have improved the tongue control and the muscles around his mouth. He is making a lot of sounds and he can blow a tiny trumpet!. We are so happy to learn and help our baby! Thanks talk tools!

Thank you for sharing your story. We are so happy to hear about your success...keep up the good work!
