Course Description

Food and eating can be a huge concern for autistic people, where sensory issues and anxiety can lead to a person having a very restricted diet. 

In this session, we'll learn all about autism and food sensitivities and explore ways to meet autistic needs around food and eating. 

 

Covering:

  • Physical health and eating 
  • Sensory sensitivities and their role in eating
  • Anxiety’s role in eating
  • Pica, Anorexia and ARFID
  • Strategies that work to help autistic children and people

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify the factors contributing to eating difficulties in autistic people
  2. Identify which of the 8 senses might be contributing to avoidant and restrictive eating
  3. Apply strategies to support over and under-eating

  • 7- 13 minutes: Physical health, co-morbid illnesses, medications and ruling out other causes.

 

  • 13 minutes- 1 Hour 7 minutes: Sensory Processing, the senses, ‘why beige?’, interoception (31:30-51:34), Sensory overload (51:34-55:21), Window of tolerance (55:21-59:10), Sensory Diet (59:10), Timetable diet (1:01:54), sensory energy accounting (1:05:03).

 

  • 1 hour 7 minutes 1 hour 34 minutes: Anxiety, anxiety & experience (1:08:04-1:22:04), Demand Avoidance, PDA, Reducing Demands (1:22:04- 1:34:45).

 

  • 1 hour 34 minutes- 1 hour 46 minutes: Eating Disorders, Types of eating disorders, pica, anorexia, arfid, (1:34:55-1:46:43).

 

  • 1 hour 46 minutes- 2 hours 1 minute: What Helps?, encourage play, eating too little (1:49:15), family style, chaining, eating too little (revisited), transitioning, eating too much (1:56:24), ADHD & eating too much, ADHD medications, (1:46:43-2:01:56).

 

  • 2 hours 1 minute- 2 hours 4 minutes Outro: Our content, our training programs, general advice.
