Course Description

Every student deserves a voice—and every classroom can be a place where AAC is not just accommodated, but fully embraced. This course guides teachers and school-based providers through the mindset shifts and practical strategies needed to create an AAC Immersion Classroom: an inclusive environment where augmentative and alternative communication feels natural, expected, and integral to daily learning. Participants will explore what it truly means to adopt an AAC immersion approach and why modeling AAC consistently across the entire classroom community is essential for communication development.
From foundational concepts like the WOW (Words of the Week) strategy and All Communication Expansion (ACE) to ready-to-use AAC lesson plans for circle time, SEL, snack, and other daily routines, this course provides real-world tools that can be implemented immediately. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the core principles of AAC immersion, practical strategies for embedding AAC modeling across the school day, and the confidence to build classrooms where every student—regardless of communication profile—has the supports to participate and be heard.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Define AAC immersion and identify the key principles that distinguish an AAC immersion classroom from traditional AAC support models.
  • Apply the WOW (Words of the Week) strategy and AAC modeling techniques across whole-group and individual instructional contexts.
  • Integrate AAC-embedded lesson plans into daily classroom routines, including circle time, SEL lessons, and snack time, to promote inclusive communication opportunities for all students.
