Course Description
This course examines the use of counseling strategies in the assessment and treatment of preschool children who stutter. Emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate, family-centered approaches that address both the child’s communication needs and the emotional experiences of the child and caregivers. Participants will learn how to confidently integrate counseling techniques into evaluation, goal setting, and intervention, while maintaining person-centered therapy when considering individual cases. This includes strategies for supporting parent understanding, reducing communicative pressure, and fostering resilience and positive communication attitudes in young children.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
Describe the importance of normalizing stuttering for a preschool child.
Integrate counseling with parents of preschool children regarding stuttering.
Integrate counseling with preschool children who stutter.
Develop treatment plans and activities that highlight cognitive and affective impact.
