Course Description

Feeding therapists are in a perfect position to identify red flags for airway disorders including upper airway resistance syndrome, sleep-disordered breathing, and obstructive sleep apnea. These disorders wreak havoc on our patients’ quality of life, impede their progress in life and in therapy, and can easily be missed by parents and other medical professionals. As therapists, we get to know our patients and their needs in detail over time, and therefore we are ideal first responders when it comes to identifying red flags for airway disorders and making appropriate referrals.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify the benefits of a patent nasal airway, as well as the negative effects of mouth breathing, upper airway
    resistance syndrome, sleep disordered breathing, and obstructive sleep apnea.
  2. Identify the critical role oral structure and function plays in the development of a patent nasal airway.
  3. Apply airway screening protocols to identify and refer patients at risk for airway disorders including upper
    airway resistance syndrome, sleep-disordered breathing, and obstructive sleep apnea.
  4. Apply orofacial myofunctional screening protocols to identify and refer patients whose oral structure and
    function impedes utilization of a patent nasal airway.
