This course emphasizes swallowing and feeding services for children in the education setting. Information on how a school district can set up the infrastructure needed to address pediatric feeding disorders including administrative approval, organization, and support, a process for identifying and treating students, a trained and experienced staff, food nutrition services with training on IDDSI, and utilizing district personnel including increasing capacity will be included. Attendees will learn how to advocate for PFDs in their school district and how to address the different PFD types of cases that are seen in the school setting. The important things that we have learned about providing services for PFDs in the school setting will be shared. The course highlights where we are in providing these necessary services and where we need to go to provide safe mealtimes for children with disabilities in the school setting.

Course Description

The evolution of dysphagia services in the fields of speech pathology and occupational therapy began with children with Cerebral Palsy in special schools. This course emphasizes swallowing and feeding services for children in the education setting. Information on how a school district can set up the infrastructure needed to address pediatric feeding disorders including administrative approval, organization, and support, a process for identifying and treating students, a trained and experienced staff, food nutrition services with training on IDDSI, and utilizing district personnel including increasing capacity will be included.   1. Identify the infrastructure needs in their district to move them in a positive direction to addressing pediatric swallowing and feeding. 
  2. Formulate a path for updating knowledge and skills based on current information available and seek out new opportunities as they emerge.
  3. List ways that every therapist can promote PFD services in the school setting.
