Course Description

Flippin’ Funetics: Building Speech from the Ground Up presents a practical, movement-based framework for supporting children who have difficulty learning speech through observation and imitation alone. Participants will examine the foundational movements involved in early speech production, including lip closure and rounding, jaw grading, tongue movement, airflow, voicing, and resonance. The course demonstrates how clinicians can use a child’s existing movement and sound repertoire to identify an appropriate starting point and systematically build from individual sounds into simple syllable combinations.

Using the Flippin’ Funetics system, participants will learn how visual and verbal instruction can be paired with tactile cues and therapeutic tools when additional motor support is needed. Particular emphasis is placed on using the least amount of support necessary, systematically fading tools and physical cues, and moving the child toward learning through watching, listening, and imitation. Participants will leave with a clinically applicable process for observing movement, identifying existing strengths, selecting initial speech targets, providing appropriate cueing, and progressively building speech movement complexity.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least three observable speech movement characteristics—including lip, jaw, tongue, airflow, voicing, and resonance patterns—to determine potential starting points for speech intervention.
2. Select appropriate early sound and CV syllable targets based on a child’s existing speech movements and productions and the motor demands required for the target.
3. Demonstrate a systematic cueing progression that incorporates visual and verbal instruction with tactile or tool-based support as needed and describe how to fade physical supports toward more independent speech production.
