Event Information

Course Description

This three-hour course offers insight into functional problems in the jaw, face, oral cavity, and  submental region. Additionally, it includes a small number of newer tongue "techniques" not included  elsewhere in the Foundations Seminar online curriculum. This is more than just a technique class, as  without a thorough understanding of the many factors at play when we intervene, technique learning  becomes rote and is often applied without context. In addition to providing the learner with new  treatment options, this course, like all Foundations Seminars courses, strongly emphasizes the "soft  skills" of establishing the therapeutic relationship, increasing patient input, and continuously  integrating manual therapy with movement/exercise. Be prepared to be challenged.

Throughout this course, you will learn novel applications and modifications of touch-based manual  therapy interventions positioned side-by-side with movement and exercise. Body regions covered  include the jaw/TMJ, the oral cavity, including the soft palate, the submental region, and a few newer  techniques for the tongue not covered in the separate "Rethinking Manual Therapy and Exercise for  the Tongue" course.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Be able to compare and contrast the traditional “tissue-based” explanatory model of change with  neurologically based models with respect to manual therapy.
  • Describe the strengths of blending exercise and manual therapy in combination.
  • Describe why it is important to separate treating a diagnosis and treating a functional limitation.
  • Describe and demonstrate the various treatment options in a manual therapy and exercise session.
  • Describe self-care options for each of the procedures addressed in this course.
