Event Information

Course Description

Functional mouth movements are the foundation for effective feeding, swallowing, speech, and overall oral participation across the lifespan. This presentation explores how purposeful movements of the jaw, lips, and tongue support everyday functions such as chewing, drinking, breathing, and verbal communication. These movements are not isolated muscle exercises; they are integrated motor patterns developed through typical growth and experience that allow smooth and efficient oral function.  This session emphasizes how coordinated, functional movement patterns develop and how they can be supported or improved at any age.

Participants will gain an understanding of typical and atypical oral movement patterns, the impact of reduced strength, range of motion, or coordination on function, and practical strategies to facilitate meaningful mouth movements in real-life activities. This presentation is designed for clinicians, educators, and caregivers seeking to better support functional oral skills in children, adolescents, and adults, including individuals with developmental differences or acquired challenges.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. The participants will be able to recognize dissociation of jaw, lips and tongue in feeding and speech.
  2. The participants will understand the importance of nasal breathing
  3. The participants will be able to name at least 2 activities to work on dissociation and graded movement for increased function in feeding and speech tasks
