Course Description

TalkTools® virtual streaming workshops and webinars are recorded. Recorded presentations are available for 2 days after the dates posted and accessible only to learners who purchased a seat for this course.

Persistent expressive speech distortions and carryover breakdowns are common clinical challenges in pediatric speech sound intervention. This course introduces a structured “Myo Lens” framework for analyzing when orofacial myofunctional patterns (e.g., oral rest posture, jaw stability/grading, tongue mobility/coordination/endurance, and compensatory oral behaviors) may contribute to ongoing expressive speech errors. Participants will review foundational concepts of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), learn a myofunctional assessment pathway, and apply clinical reasoning to differentiate cases appropriate for traditional articulation/phonological treatment from cases benefiting from integrated, OMD-informed planning and/or interprofessional collaboration. Through error-pattern mapping and case-based application, attendees will develop practical intervention plans that pair speech sound targets with foundational orofacial targets and select functional outcome measures to support generalization and long-term stability.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will analyze evaluation findings (case history, oral mechanism exam, chewing/swallowing assessment, and speech sampling) to identify orofacial myofunctional patterns that may contribute to persistent expressive speech distortions.
  2. Participants will apply a structured clinical reasoning to differentiate cases warranting integrated, OMD-informed treatment planning and/or interprofessional referral.
  3. Participants will design intervention plans that integrate speech sound targets with foundational orofacial targets (e.g., jaw stability/grading, tongue–jaw dissociation, lingual endurance, and oral rest posture) and select functional outcome measures to monitor generalization and carryover.
