Course Description

This is a 90 min on demand webinar designed for OT, SLP and other feeding specialists in the space who are interested in expanding their knowledge on the connection between gross motor skills and feeding skills across early childhood populations. Specifically the toddler who is independently ambulating to the 3rd-4th year of life and is now navigating independent toileting while managing table foods/liquids.


The course is intended to enhance their skills in screening and referral techniques while expanding their assessment within their scope of practice. There is not a pre-course but this is designed to build on the previous course/first portion of this series. It is intended to open the conversation between allied health professionals and decrease the amount of isolation in the feeding community.


The on demand course will include understanding the potential for in-depth care and holistic care with this population and review of health domains/body systems review. The course also highlights the progression and foundation of pelvic health as basics motor learning portions of toileting are learned at this crucial development expansion. While this course is about typical topics the integration and utilization of its contents are highly nuanced and require a student who is curious and ready to expand their knowledge - not simply take another course for credits.
 

Learning Outcomes

The participant will be able to:

  1. Student will identify at least 3 connections to gross motor skills that are age appropriate and support bilateral coordination.
  2. Students will define 3 reasons to request a consult from a PT team member or indications for referral out to PT
  3. Student will explain at least 2 postural supports to encourage nasal breathing during liquid drinking.
  4. Students will list at least 2 indications for potty learning to be initiated and 1 sign of true regression.
  5. Students will explain the connection between jaw/neck tension and toileting behaviors in patient friendly language.

15 min Overview: orient to current topics (quick intro to instructor for singleton students)

30 min Module 1: Milestones necessary for adequate full feeding cycle (upright sitting, standing, midline coordination, early awareness of pelvic floor which closes out the “full feeding cycle” which is from airway to anus or chewing to elimination)

30 min Module 2: seated posture related to solid and liquid drinking skills.

15 min Review and Prep for Course III: Review based on objectives and quiz questions and preview of course III
