Course Description

TalkTools® virtual streaming workshops and webinars are recorded. Recorded presentations are available for 2 days after the dates posted and accessible only to learners who purchased a seat for this course.

Every speech-language pathologist (SLP) has experienced it. During therapy a client correctly produces a target sound in words, phrases, sentences, and even in structured conversation. Yet when they leave the therapy room, the new speech pattern disappears. So, why does this happen? More importantly, what can we do about it?

Over the years, Char has come to view carryover not as a single final phase of therapy, but as a process that can be intentionally developed throughout treatment. In this course, she outlines a strategic carryover approach based on speech production components and motor learning principles. She outlines the procedures and progressive steps to achieve successful transfer and long-term retention. In addition, participants discover common contributors that interfere with carryover as well as practical techniques to ease the frustration.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain three carryover frustration contributors and how to handle them.
  2. Integrate several motor learning principles into therapy applications.
  3. Apply three progressive strategies to work toward generating carryover.
