Course Description
It is now accepted that chronic oral breathing is an important clinical marker of orofacial muscle dysfunction. It is also known to be associated with abnormal dento-facial development including palatal growth restriction, compromised airway, and an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children. What is not so well known is that chronic oral breathing is an indicator of a fundamental disturbance in baseline (awake and asleep) breathing pattern, an elevated drive to breathe, and a sympathetic dominant state.
This theoretical and experiential workshop provides an understanding of relevant respiratory physiology and tools to identify and address dysfunctional breathing habits and abnormal drive to breathe, that may underlie, aggravate, and perpetuate OMD, airway and sleep disorders, and prevent, delay and destabilize attempts to restore nasal breathing pattern.
Clinical and research findings and case studies are used to illustrate incidence, and the application and results of comprehensive breathing retraining in these disorders. You will practice basic skills to apply in a clinical situation to down-regulate an elevated drive to breathe, defuse the stress response and to improve and stabilize breathing for immediate and long-term benefits.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify relevant elements of a dysfunctional breathing pattern.
2. Define dysfunctional breathing and its relationship to sympathetic dominant state, tissue oxygenation, nasal congestion, oral function, airway mechanics, adult and pediatric sleep breathing disorders and general health and wellbeing.
3. Describe the breathing retraining process
4. Apply techniques and approaches for enhanced outcomes for OMD and airway/sleep disorders.
