Course Description

This course provides speech-language pathologists with a practical framework for building independent AAC communicators across school and therapy settings. Participants will explore what communication independence looks like beyond simply using an AAC device correctly, including self-generated communication, access to robust vocabulary, communication breakdown repair, self-advocacy, and authentic participation.
The course focuses on communication partner strategies including aided language input, modeling without testing, core vocabulary, partner responsiveness, personalization, reducing prompt dependence, and creating authentic communication opportunities. Participants will also learn practical approaches for generalizing AAC across everyday environments and collaborating with families, educators, and other communication partners to support consistent implementation and carryover.


 

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define communication independence for individuals who use AAC and identify key characteristics of independent communication.
  2. Identify communication partner strategies that support AAC learning, including aided language input, modeling, partner responsiveness, and authentic communication opportunities.
  3. Apply strategies to reduce prompt dependence and promote AAC use across therapy, school, home, and community environments
