In this course, the presenter will discuss clinical experiences of combining neuroaffirming therapy approaches to support regulation and engagement with motor treatment methodologies to treat neurodivergent children with motor speech challenges. An overview of neuroaffirming, connection-based, child-led and trauma-informed therapy will be provided. Ideas of how to promote regulation and engagement as well as total communication from the presenter’s clinical work will be discussed. The Motor Speech intervention Neuro Diversity Affirming Practice (MIND-AP) Framework (Moore et al, 2024) will be discussed. Ideas for how to structure therapy sessions from the presenter’s clinical experience as well as the MIND-AP Framework (Moore et al, 2024) will be presented.  

Children with motor speech disorders need treatment based on the principles of motor learning in order to achieve optimal progress. Many clinicians utilize at least some principles of motor learning when treating speech sound disorders, but are not confident about how to utilize these principles for maximal success. The principles of motor learning will be discussed, as well as how to best utilize them in therapy for generalization. Evidence-based motor therapy approaches based on the principles of motor learning, including Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing, Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment and Speech Motor Chaining, will be discussed. 

Participants will be able to: 

1. Define two foundational aspects of neuroaffirming therapy.
2. Identify three ways that apraxia therapy may be modified for an autistic child.
3. List two multisensory cues that may not be appropriate for autistic children.
