This course focuses on a simple strategy that not only benefits the child exploring food, but also how the family can play a role in creating a judgment free and slightly playful feeding experience. Describing food is a strategy that comes from the sensory integration model.

Event Information

Course Description

Working with picky eaters can be frustrating for the therapist, the child, and the family. Families begin to stress food throughout the day, which is exhausting. Therapists are put to the challenge to not only assist the child in expanding their diet but to provide education, support and resources for the family. This course focuses on a simple strategy that not only benefits the child exploring food, but also how the family can play a role in creating a judgment free and slightly playful feeding experience. Describing food is a strategy that comes from the sensory integration model.

Through this course, participants will learn the process of setting up an environment that does not put a focus on positive or negative reactions of food presented but merely learning to describe the attribute of the food. Additionally, this course will take the information one step further towards applying use of the strategy with a variety of ages (with specific treatment intervention ideas), use of the strategy with child who have mental health disabilities, and ways to instruct families in developing their own vocabulary of foods descriptors during meal times in the home and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Formulate a baseline of food descriptors in addition to identifying ways to integrate use of describing foods into treatment interventions.
  2. Integrate treatment interventions with a focus on creating a judgment free feeding experience.
  3. Identify clients who have sensory processing difficulties with food vs emotional difficulties associated with food.
