Course Description | This course provides an evidence-informed overview of sleep diagnostics with emphasis on terminology, data interpretation, and the clinical relevance of sleep-disordered breathing.
Participants will learn to interpret key elements of sleep studies, understand respiratory event classifications, and evaluate sleep study reports for patterns that may impact communication, cognition, and overall health. Special focus is given to recognizing upper airway resistance, REM fragmentation, and sleep architecture changes relevant to pediatric and adult populations.
Learning Outcomes | Participants will be able to:
- Define key terminology and acronyms used in sleep diagnostics
- Describe the stages of sleep and their neurological significance
- Identify common respiratory events and interpret their clinical impact
- Identify effects of common medications on sleep architecture
- Explain the difference between PSG and HST modalities and their implications
- Analyze sleep study reports for signs of disrupted sleep architecture and upper airway resistance
