Course Description

TalkTools® virtual streaming workshops and webinars are recorded. Recorded presentations are available for 2 days after the dates posted and accessible only to learners who purchased a seat for this course.

This course provides early intervention professionals with evidence-based knowledge and practical strategies to support bilingual language development in infants and young children (birth to 5 years). Participants will explore typical bilingual language milestones, distinguish between language differences and language disorders, understand the cognitive, social, and cultural benefits of bilingualism, and learn family-centered coaching techniques that promote language development in both languages. The course emphasizes culturally responsive practices and practical intervention activities that can be implemented during home visits, clinic sessions, and everyday routines.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe typical bilingual language development milestones from birth through 5 years of age.
2. Differentiate between a language difference and a true language disorder using evidence-based indicators.
3. Explain the cognitive, academic, social, and cultural benefits of bilingualism to families and caregivers.
4. Apply parent coaching strategies that encourage rich language learning opportunities in the family’s home language(s).
5. Design developmentally appropriate therapy activities that support communication across both languages.
