Event Information

Course Description

School-based Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are uniquely positioned to observe and address oral health issues that significantly impact speech, feeding, cognitive performance, and overall wellness.

This course explores the foundational connection between oral health and systemic health, including how poor oral posture, airway restrictions, and sleep-disordered breathing can influence articulation, behavior, learning, and development.

Participants will learn how to recognize and refer issues such as mouth breathing, improper oral resting posture, tongue ties, and dental malocclusions. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary collaboration and preventative approaches, empowering SLPs to advocate for the health and academic success of their students.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the relationship between oral health, tongue posture, and sleep-disordered breathing in school-age children.
  2. Analyze the impact of oral structural differences on speech clarity and overall communication development.
  3. Apply interdisciplinary strategies to collaborate with dental and medical professionals and educate families on oral health and its effect on academic success.
