Course Description

This course aims to explore the intersection of myofunctional therapy and speech therapy, highlighting the synergies between these two disciplines and their potential to enhance treatment outcomes. Participants will gain insight into identifying myofunctional disorders, understanding the role of orofacial muscles in speech production, and recognizing the impact of myofunctional disorders on speech and language development. Additionally, they will learn specific myofunctional therapy techniques to improve oral strength and coordination, thus increasing traditional speech therapy success. We will focus primarily on producing/r/, /l/ and /s/ sounds. Through case studies, attendees will acquire practical strategies for integrating myofunctional therapy techniques into speech therapy interventions, fostering a more holistic approach to assessment and treatment.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify the main facial muscles needed for speaking
  2. Identify typical signs of an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD) related to speech difficulties
  3. Assess the muscle strength and coordination of the tongue, lips and jaw for /r/, /l/, and /s/
  4. Apply specific myofunctional exercises to improve tongue resting posture and movement for /r/, /l/ and /s/
  5. List short drilling activities versus playing game in group sessions
