Speaker: Timothy King, BTh. Adv. Dip. App. Sci. Myotherapy MA

Course Description

Fascia is a trendy word these days. A whole host of therapies attribute successful clinical outcomes to fascial interventions. But are these therapy claims evidence-based or just hype? In short, do speech pathologists need to know more about fascial anatomy?

This course will give the thinking speech pathologist a rigorous understanding of fascia, its role in various oromyofunctional disorders and how this knowledge impacts referral for manual therapy and your oromyofunctional therapy prescriptions.

Learning Outcomes
The participant will be able to:
  1. Analyze the micro and macro anatomy of fascia and its role in function.
  2. Describe the scientific evidence to date. What is fact and what is rubbish.
  3. Explain the clinical implications of fascial dysfunction in relation to oromyofunctional disorders, ankyloglossia, TMD and dysphagia.
  4. Demonstrate manual assessment that you can use clinically and what manual therapies to collaborate with as adjunct treatment for you patients.
Timed Agenda
  • 10 min -- Fascia: a history of non-discovery
  • 10 min -- Macro anatomy and function
