Course Description
TalkTools® virtual streaming workshops and webinars are recorded. Recorded presentations are available for 2 days after the dates posted and accessible only to learners who purchased a seat for this course.
Orofacial and laryngeal pain rarely respects professional boundaries — a patient with jaw pain may also report throat tightness, vocal fatigue, mouth breathing, and disrupted sleep, with contributors spanning temporomandibular, myofascial, laryngeal, airway, and behavioral systems. This course teaches a structured, interdisciplinary approach to these overlapping presentations for SLPs, orofacial myofunctional therapists, dentists, dental hygienists, TMJ/craniofacial specialists, and voice/airway professionals.
Across six parts, participants move through pain-science foundations, functional anatomy, a comprehensive clinical assessment battery (history, DC/TMD screening, palpation, voice and vocal-tract measures, breathing and airway screening, and central sensitization), a full red-flag and differential framework for referral decisions, and evidence-informed treatment strategies with explicit certainty and applicability labeling for every technique. A composite running case threads through the final module, applying all three learning objectives to a single patient from initial presentation through treatment planning and reassessment.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- Identify musculoskeletal, functional, airway/respiratory, and behavioral contributors to orofacial and laryngeal pain through interdisciplinary assessment.
- Differentiate treatment candidates from patients who require medical, dental, psychological, or specialty referral using a red-flag/differential framework.
- Implement evidence-informed oral-motor, breathing, voice, postural, and pain-education strategies within scope.
